Tout Arrive Pour une Raison

Tout arrive pour une raison ….“Everything happens for a reason.”

In Aristotle's quest to discover the true meaning of life, he said there are two constants. First, the universe is constantly changing and evolving. Second, entelechy, which is the realization of potential. Basically he discovered that what it is today is never the same tomorrow, and that is where we get the saying “everything happens for a reason” or as the French say Tout arrive pour une raison.

If you had asked me a year and a half ago where I would be sitting today, I would not have said in my cute Charlotte apartment, with my Masters Degree, about to start yet another exciting chapter in my life. The Covid-19 pandemic changed my life, as it has for just about everyone. March 2019 I was on spring break when the world seemingly came crashing down.

I could go on and on about how my dream job got ripped out from under me, more than once, or how my senior year of college ended in the blink of an eye. Missing that last hoorah in the sorority house, final dance performances, senior ball, and graduation felt as if all my hard work had been for nothing. As if those hours studying for exams, the countless nights in the dance studio perfecting pieces, and the internships I had worked so hard to get and gave up so much to be able to do had actually vanished. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I realized Tout arrive pour une raison ….“Everything happens for a reason.”

When I attempt to make sense of this past year and a half, I say “I had the opportunity to.” There is no doubt that I am extremely blessed, and I am thankful for what this past year and a half has given me the opportunity to do.

I had the opportunity to…. Spend some quality time with my family. Even though quarantine was horrendous and ruined my five year plan, I’m very thankful for the time I got to spend with my family. Back in sweet sweet Hampton, New Hampshire we really made the best of it. I am still in shock by the amount of “TikTok Dinners” I was able to convince my family to participate in. We’re talking decorations, costumes, themed menu items and lots and lots of beverages. If you want to check them out, follow me on TikTok @emilydeannedurant …. I still think our Margaritaville was the best, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

I had the opportunity to….attend graduate school. It’s been a busy past thirteen months as I worked towards my Master of Arts in Communication and Business Leadership at none other than my alma mater High Point University. I feel truly blessed that I was able to return to the school I love so much, in person, to be able to further my education. During what seemed like a hopeless time, dedicating myself to my studies, supported by top notch professors and peers, allowed me to pursue something that I had never thought I’d be capable of. I had the opportunity to make some amazing friends along the way and memories that will last a lifetime.

I had the opportunity to…. Conduct research and present a thesis. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the inaugural class of this program and sought to find a way to benefit the legacy of the program as a whole. Here, I conducted data analysis on research regarding improvements and suggestions for the Communication and Business Leadership Masters Program at High Point University. You can read more about this and even check out my white paper in this article.

I had the opportunity to…. Explore new career fields and try something new. As you may or may not know, my undergraduate studies were focused in Broadcast Communication and Performing Arts with a concentration in Dance. This season of my life gave me the opportunity to explore my potential in the marketing and social media world and my first “big girl job.” I am grateful for the experiences I have had and all the joys a first job brings… like moving to a new city!

It’s safe to say that this pandemic we continue to experience has changed the world and all of us in it, but it is also safe to say that Tout arrive pour une raison ….“Everything happens for a reason.”

And that my friends is the la joie de vivre, the joy of life. Exciting things coming next…. Stay tuned for the reveal of my latest adventure & cheers to the next chapter.
